Favorite toys as a kid

My mom worked for the LEGO Group for 35 years, my dad 12 years. I grew up with LEGO Scala. That was my favorite thing to play with. And I loved to draw.

Top tips on how to stay creative

  • It really boils down to “Dare to be ugly!” Some people can create beautiful interior design projects. I’m not very good at it, so it’s a long, slow challenge, and I take small steps. Enjoy the process. Be proud of your project instead of competing with others. This is critical to keeping creativity alive! (It will never look exactly like that picture on Pinterest, anyway…)

  • Structure your materials. A big box of LEGO bricks can overwhelm even the best of us. Look for hinges, joints, wheels, windows, bricks with knobs. Put eyes on something, and it immediately springs to life and sparks your imagination. Sort colors to get a clear overview of what you have so you can concentrate on your build. Or use paper, colors, leaves or things you find outside to be creative with.

People who inspired you

My parents are very creative. My parents always did creative things with us. The dining table would be covered in clay one day, and a big piece of paper for us to paint on the next. It was fantastic!

At school it was my arts and music teachers. They always inspired us to try new things, too. Great teachers help you see what you’re good at and bring out the best in you.

Places that inspired you

In a corner of our garden we had a tall bamboo circle. My two younger brothers and I always dragged our blankets in there to play. It was so cozy!

What does creativity mean to you?

Playing while creating. It’s like learning a new language. You won’t speak it fluently the first day. But each time you practice, you’ll get better.

When you dive into new things head first, you discover creativity has no boundaries. I don’t draw as much as I used to, but now I LOVE knitting. One little discovery leads to the next, and it just snowballs. I can spend hours in my “bubble”, knitting, creating plastic pearl designs or painting without noticing what’s going on around me.
